Painting notes – I painted this portrait of my partner Michael, from a photo I took in April 2021, when he had just begun his cancer journey. I do see Michael so much in this painting. The slightly pensive look can be a smile or a grimace. As if one side of his face is happy and the other sad. I talk to the painting all the time, as if he’s still here. It works in every situation. He seems to reflect my mood. I’d done hardly any portraits and didn’t know what I was doing. I just painted along with a tutorial by Richard Schmid, painting Michelle Dunaway. Easy!
